What Ambrosia Meals is
Ambrosia Meals is a New York City company that cooks organic, ready-to-heat meals and ships them across the United States. Its homepage headline is "Organic Healthy Meal Delivery: Chef Prepared With Clean Ingredients," and the meals arrive fully cooked, so all you do is reheat. It is not a kit.
The selling point is a strict ingredient list. The company says its meals are "always 100% free-of dairy, added sugars, gluten, refined/seed oils, trans fats, and artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives," and that it uses only "100% organic produce," "Grass-fed, pasture-raised meats" and "Wild-caught seafood." It frames the whole business as "food as medicine" and lists benefits it attributes to its food, from reduced inflammation and better sleep to improved skin. Those are the company's claims; the site does not cite studies for them.
How ordering works
There are 3 ways to buy, and none requires a subscription:
- The Weekly Subscription: Lunch & Dinner Meal Plan, entrées only, where you pick a number of meals per week and a dietary preference.
- The Lunches/Dinners Only plan, the same entrée plan as a one-off order.
- The Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner Meal Plan, a one-off plan in 9, 15 or 21 meals, where each "day" is 1 breakfast, 1 lunch and 1 dinner, so 9 meals cover 3 days and 21 cover 7.
The dietary preference menu offers "No Modifications - Signature Chef Selection," "Low Carb Meals Only," "Pescatarian Meals Only," "No Red Meat" and "Vegan." In the meal plans, the chef chooses the dishes based on what is in stock that week; you steer it with the preference and with notes. Allergies, intolerances and dislikes go in the comment box at checkout, and the company says it will exclude those ingredients. You can also email specific menu requests.
Alongside the plans is an à la carte menu of bulk proteins, sides and soups, which you can order on its own or add to a plan.
The order cutoff is Fridays at 4 PM EST for delivery the following week. Cancelling a subscription has its own, earlier deadline and a firm rule: you cancel yourself under account settings, then "manage subscription," before Thursdays at 10PM EST. The site says, in capitals, that it cannot cancel for you and cannot refund a charge if you miss that cutoff.
What it costs
- Weekly Subscription, Lunch & Dinner: from $99.00 every week
- Lunches/Dinners Only (one-off): from $102.00
- Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner Meal Plan (one-off): from $216.00
These are ongoing prices; the site shows no first-order discount. À la carte items are priced individually, for example $14.89 for 6oz of organic chicken breast, turkey meatballs or grass-fed ground beef, $19.25 for 6oz of grass-fed filet mignon, wild-caught salmon or shrimp, $9.99 for most 4oz vegetable sides, $15.99 for a 16oz lentil or split pea soup, and $16.99 for a chia pudding.
Delivery is charged separately: "Delivery fees vary per zip code," and you choose the fee that matches your zip at checkout. A referral scheme gives $15 off your next order for each friend who orders.
The food
The menu for the week of September 21 lists 20 signature meals with protein, carb and fat grams for each. Examples include Chicken Thigh Cauliflower Risotto (45gP, 25gC, 10gF), Grilled Cajun Salmon with sweet potato, Steak with Green Peppercorn Sauce and garlic mashed potatoes, Fajita Chicken Breast with 5 grain blend and black beans, and Turkey Meatballs with Marinara. Vegan options include a Zucchini Lasagna, Roasted Tempeh, a Veggie Burger with Portobello Bun and a chickpea High Protein Pasta with pesto. Breakfasts include Scrambled Eggs with berries, Oatmeal with almond milk and a Coconut Chia Pudding. Low-carb and vegan versions are variations built from the same kitchen ingredients, and the menu rotates weekly.
The company says meals are "individually portioned," but it gives macros rather than weights for the plan meals. Allergy warning: all meals are made in a kitchen that "contains traces of nuts, shellfish, gluten, and other allergens," so the gluten-free promise refers to ingredients, not a certified gluten-free facility.
Heating instructions are specific. In the microwave, remove the lid and heat for 60-90 seconds, stirring halfway. On the stovetop, which the site recommends for bowls, proteins and vegetables, heat in a pan for 3-5 minutes with a splash of water, oil or broth. In an oven or toaster oven, heat at 350°F for 10-12 minutes, covered. Containers are recyclable, BPA-free, and microwave and dishwasher safe.
Where it delivers
Ambrosia says it delivers "all across the USA." The schedule depends on distance from New York: within 70 miles of NYC, deliveries come every Monday between 5pm and 10pm; further away, orders arrive Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Either way, the company says meals "last up to 6-7 days in the fridge," and you can freeze them for longer. Local customers can leave their delivery bags out for the couriers to collect and recycle.
Beyond home delivery, the company does catering, offers to install and stock smart fridges with its meals in offices, gyms and other buildings, and sells nutrition coaching and personal training. The homepage shows a 4.9 rating and lists partners including Equinox, the Mercedes Club and New York Fashion Week, and the footer invites donations to its charity partner, Citymeals on Wheels.
What the site leaves open, and who it suits
The shipping fee is the main unknown, since it is only shown once you enter a zip code, and for customers far from New York it will matter. The site also doesn't explain how the meals are kept cold on a Tuesday or Wednesday shipment, or give portion weights for plan meals. The gap between the Friday order cutoff and the Thursday cancellation cutoff is easy to trip over, so note both.
Ambrosia suits people who want strictly clean-label, organic prepared meals, particularly anyone avoiding gluten, dairy, seed oils or added sugar, and who like seeing macros for each dish. New York area customers get a set Monday evening delivery. It suits people who want to pick every dish themselves less well, since the plans are chef's choice, and the premium ingredients show in the price.
