Jessie & Laurent

Tap a star to rate

Jessie & Laurent is a chef-prepared meal delivery service based in San Rafael, California, serving "the greater San Francisco Bay Area, the Sacramento to Auburn corridor, and North Lake Tahoe." It cooks everything in its own kitchen and delivers it chilled with warming instructions, so there is "No cooking required on your end." It is prepared food, not a kit.

The feel is closer to a neighborhood caterer than a national meal plan. The menu is long and changes weekly, dishes are priced one by one, and the company says it has been making meals "For 40+ years." The How It Works page describes the idea as "thoughtful, planned dining" rather than instant meals: you fill your week with dishes that are ready when you want them.

How ordering works

Setting up takes 3 steps: enter your zip code, select your preferred delivery day, then browse the weekly menus. There is no subscription. The FAQ is direct about it: "Jessie & Laurent has no subscription and no recurring charge. You order when you want meals and skip when you do not."

The one rule is a minimum spend. "The only requirement is a $60 minimum per delivery order," and the cart will stop you with a "Weekly Order Minimum" message if you're under it. With mains mostly priced between $23 and $46, that means a couple of dishes or more per order.

Menus are posted for several weeks at once, so you can plan ahead. The homepage links this week's menu, next week's, and the weeks of Oct 5 and Oct 12, and each weekly menu carries its own "Order by" date. A typical week lists 48 to 52 products, split into Main Entrees, Side Dishes and "Fun Extras." The homepage adds that the menu covers "entrees, sides, soups, salads, and desserts."

What it costs

Prices are printed on every dish, and they sit at the premium end. From recent weekly menus:

  • Beef Meatballs with Marinara Sauce, Kung Pao Chicken and Three Cheese Ravioli with Marinara Sauce: $23 each
  • Bangers and Mash and Chicken Stuffed Poblano Chilies: $24
  • Calvados Chicken Thighs: $27
  • Mediterranean Chicken Confit with Couscous Medley: $29
  • Corn and Snap Pea Risotto with Pimenton Prawns: $31
  • Irish Beef Stew with Guinness: $37
  • Traditional Beef Brisket: $42
  • Orange-Glazed Salmon with Wild Rice Pilaf: $45
  • Braised Short Ribs & Tomato Sauce with Gnocchi: $46
  • Succulent BBQ Beef Short Ribs: $52

The biggest ticket is a Pastrami Reuben Sandwich Kit at $77, with the plain Pastrami Reuben Sandwich at $69. The site doesn't say how many people each dish serves, which makes these hard to line up against a per-serving price elsewhere.

Delivery costs nothing extra: "Complimentary Delivery, Every Time." The site shows no first-order discount, so these are the ongoing prices. A newsletter sign-up promises "exclusive offers," without figures.

The food

The range is wide and leans on classic European and American comfort cooking with plenty of detours. Recent weeks include Classic French Beef Bourguignon, French Countryside Coq Au Vin, Gruyere & Ham Crepes, Traditional Greek Moussaka with Lamb and a vegetarian moussaka, Braised Hungarian Beef Stroganoff, Duck Bolognese with Gnocchi, Roast Chicken with Oaxacan Mole, Roast Yucatan Chicken, Bibimbap Korean Rice Bowl with Hanger Steak, Japanese Fried Chicken Karaage, Moo Shu Pork, Indian Chicken Korma, Fresh Paneer with Curried Spinach and Butternut Squash Corn Tamales.

Dietary filtering is well developed. Each menu can be filtered by Wheat Free, Dairy Free, Vegetarian, Vegan and Freezable, plus "Modifiable" wheat-free and dairy-free dishes that can be adjusted on request. The counts change weekly; the menu for the week of October 19 shows 36 wheat-free, 30 dairy-free, 30 vegetarian, 21 vegan and 24 freezable items among 52 products. The FAQ adds that the kitchen "is not a certified allergen-free facility," so anyone with a severe allergy should contact the company before ordering.

On sourcing, the homepage promises "sustainably sourced seafood and antibiotic-free poultry to fresh, locally grown produce." The FAQ is firm on freshness: "Every Jessie & Laurent meal is prepared in our kitchen and delivered chilled, never frozen." The Freezable tag marks dishes you can put in your own freezer.

The menus can also be filtered by protein (beef, poultry, pork, seafood, lamb, tofu, legume, and dairy and egg) and by course, and dishes carry "Bestseller" and "New" tags. Not everything is a heavy braise: lighter picks include Thai Turkey Lettuce Boats at $27, Chicken Shawarma with Pita & Tzatziki at $25 and a Waldorf Chicken Salad Wrap at $35.

Where it delivers

The company delivers "to most of the greater San Francisco Bay Area, the Sacramento to Auburn region, and the North Lake Tahoe area." The word "most" matters: you enter your zip code to confirm your address and see which delivery days are available to you. Testimonials on the site come from customers in San Francisco, Mill Valley, San Anselmo, San Mateo, San Jose, Berkeley and Tiburon, which fits a San Rafael kitchen serving the wider Bay.

Gifting is built in. You can buy a gift card or arrange a delivery for someone else, and one testimonial credits the meals with helping an elderly client stay independent for years.

What the site leaves open, and who it suits

A few practical points are missing from the public pages. Delivery days and time windows only appear after you enter a zip code. The site doesn't state portion sizes or servings per dish, which makes the price list harder to read than it looks, and it doesn't say how long a chilled meal keeps in the fridge. The FAQ points to a fuller help page on "delivery timing, packaging, payment, and account setup" that isn't summarized on the homepage.

Jessie & Laurent suits Northern California households who want restaurant-style dishes at home without a subscription, and who value a long, changing menu with good vegetarian, vegan, wheat-free and dairy-free choice. Free delivery and a clear $60 minimum keep ordering simple. It is a less natural fit for anyone chasing a low price per meal, since single dishes start at $23, and it only reaches the Bay Area, the Sacramento to Auburn stretch and North Lake Tahoe.
