Nutrisystem

Tap a star to rate

Nutrisystem is a weight-loss meal delivery service, not a cook-at-home kit. Its meals are "chef-prepared in USDA-inspected facilities, flash-frozen," and shipped to your door, and the FAQ says "Most meals are ready in 3-5 minutes." The company says it has "helped millions of people lose weight for over 50 years," and its site now also sells Jenny Craig plans alongside its own. If you want someone else to plan and portion most of your day's food around a weight-loss goal, this is the structured, long-established option.

How ordering works

Nutrisystem sells food in a few formats, and the FAQ explains the difference clearly.

Programs cover your whole day: "breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks," for 5 or 7 days a week. Individual programs ship every 4 weeks, and Partner programs, for 2 people in one household, ship every 2 weeks. The structured Weight Loss Plan includes "a special first week for fast results," Hearty Inspirations high-protein dinners, personalized nutrition guides, the companion app and coaching support. On the 5-day version you add your own meals on the other days, and every plan builds in "Flex meals," which you prepare yourself using the company's guidelines.

Meal Plans are smaller and goal-based: High Protein, Low Carb or Menopause. The FAQ gives exact counts: 1 person every 2 weeks gets 24 meals, 1 person every 4 weeks gets 48, 2 people every 2 weeks get 56, and 2 people every 4 weeks get 112. The Menopause plan isn't available with the partner option.

A la carte buying runs through Club Advantage, which offers "100+ a la carte options." Meal plans include Club Advantage free for your first month.

For a first order, the company pushes its pre-selected "Chef's Choice" or "Chef's Picks" selection, saying "Our most successful customers start with Chef's Choice first." After that you can pick every meal yourself ("Choose My Own").

Everything runs on auto-delivery. You can edit foods until your order processes, and the plans page sets the deadline at "6pm Eastern Time on the day before your order begins processing." You can "push your ship date forward by up to 30 days." Cancelling a subscription is a toggle in My Account, but the FAQ says cancelling auto-delivery or a program requires "a quick conversation with our team" by chat or email.

What it costs

Nutrisystem publishes several price points, and it's worth keeping them apart.

  • The current promotion: "Specialty plans starting at just $99!" for a High Protein, Low Carb or Menopause plan, "Valid for new customers on first shipment of auto-delivery order only." The homepage frames this as "Save $45 on Specialty plans." That $99 is a first-shipment rate, not the ongoing price.
  • The structured Weight Loss Plan page says "Plans starting at $10.00/day."
  • A la carte: "Starting at $1.99 Per Meal," which the footnote says is "based on the lowest price in Club Advantage individual meals and snacks."
  • Club Advantage access is listed as a "$9.99 value," free with meal plans.

The fine print matters. On the specialty plans, "If you cancel after the first 7 days and before paying for your second plan shipment, there's a charge of $125 for the auto-delivery discount you received on your first shipment." Prepaying for several shipments avoids that charge and brings extra savings, and prepay options "lock in free shipping on every shipment." There's also a money-back promise: the FAQ says if you're "not satisfied after your first 14 days on the program," the company will refund your first order. Partner plans save "an additional 15%."

The food itself

The homepage shows calories, protein and fiber for each dish, which is useful for comparing. A sample: Beef Taco Bowl (240 cal, 17g protein, 7g fiber), tagged High-Protein, Carb-Conscious and GLP-1; Bistro-Style Chicken Alfredo (370 cal, 30g protein); Chicken & Red Rice Grain Bowl (430 cal, 20g protein); Farmhouse Breakfast Bowl (180 cal); and a Chocolate Lava Cake at 150 cal. The about page says the range includes "pizzas, burgers and plant-based favorites." Hearty Inspirations dinners are the largest meals, with "up to 30g protein," and "can be microwaved or heated in a skillet."

The company describes its approach as "high-protein, lower-glycemic," and says plans include "No artificial sweeteners or flavors." The Low Carb plan features "Filling options with less than 25g of net carbs." The company bills the Menopause plan as "Dietitian-designed to help women fuel your metabolism, burn stubborn fat," and says it helps "reduce hot flashes." On diabetes, it says "Most Nutrisystem meals are diabetes friendly" and adds "We recommend consulting your physician before starting." On GLP-1 medication, the FAQ answers "Yes" to following the program while taking it. All of these are the company's own claims about its plans.

Weight-loss claims, attributed

Nutrisystem's marketing is built on results, with footnotes. "Lose up to 7 lbs in your first 7 days" is footnoted "In a study, avg. weight loss was 5.1 lbs in first week on Nutrisystem," and requires following the first-week guide. Testimonials carry the line "Weight lost on prior program. Paid for appearance. Expect to lose an avg. 1-2 lbs. per week." The partner claim, "Lose up to 20% more weight with a partner," is footnoted as based on "scientific literature on dieting in small groups." These are Nutrisystem's figures, not independent results.

Where it ships

Orders ship via FedEx, with "Frozen and non-frozen items" in "separate containers in the same shipment." The FAQ says most orders process within 1-2 business days and arrive within 4-7 business days; a plan page says orders ship "within 1-5 business days." Nutrisystem's own FAQ doesn't list which states it serves. The Jenny Craig plan page on the same site says those orders go only to the Contiguous U.S., excluding AK, HI, Puerto Rico, APO and PO Boxes, so check your address at checkout if you're outside the contiguous U.S.

What the site leaves open, and who it suits

The ongoing price of a specialty plan after the $99 first shipment isn't printed in plain text; the plan builder shows it as you configure. The delivery area for Nutrisystem-branded plans isn't stated outright.

Nutrisystem suits someone who wants a structured, portion-controlled plan with published calories on every dish, a big menu, and support tools, and who is comfortable with auto-delivery. The partner option suits couples. It suits less well anyone who dislikes subscription terms with an early-cancellation charge, or who wants fresh rather than frozen food.
